Motivating our kiddos is essential to keeping them engaged both in the classroom and at home. The token board tool can help with a variety of situations including finishing homework, completing chores, or even waiting for something fun. When there’s a situation like the last 3 questions of homework or saturday morning chores, pull out the token board and with your child decide on a reward, it could be a walk, board game, playing outside anything that is enticing. Place that icon that relates to the reward at the top of the chart (in the single square). Each time your child finishes with a homework question, they get to put a smiley face on the square starting on the left, when they have all three, their task is complete and the reward is given.
A couple of notes. Here is a great space to practice the tip from above, after the first two squares are filled, give your kiddo a couple seconds to see if the place the 3rd token on the board themselves. If they don’t, thats okay, this is still a new skill there are learning. Remind them and congratulate them on a job completed! If you have older children you can add more squares too. Keep in mind if you are going to add more, start small and work your way up to the higher number. As your child is learning this tool the reward needs to be short and sweet. Similarly if your child is struggling with the 3 squares, start with one and work up to the 3. Keep up the good work and remember we are here to help!
Smiley faces not your kid’s thing? Use stickers instead. Either laminate and add velcro or print the top out as many times as you need!
The token board is also easy to find in our tool kit, always available to you.
